Cue the May flowers! After Boston’s record-breaking rainfall in the month of April, we are jazzed for some sparkling bright days, and, yes, flowers. You know, good walking around weather. Because there’s plenty of great photography to get out and see. Here is our roundup of the most exciting exhibits and events in Boston and the burbs – by geographic area, so you can plan your walk.
SOWA – Boston’s South End Art Gallery District

Gallery Kayafas – Is this a photograph? Indeed it is. With his series title riffing on none other than René Magritte, photographer Daniel Ranalli offers dazzling architectural motifs from Cape Cod in his “Iconic Cape Cod Paintings (This Is Not A Photograph)”, on view through May 18th, 2019, with an Artist’s Reception on First Friday, May 3rd, 2019 from 5:30 – 8:00pm. CAMBRIDGE
The Cooper Gallery at Harvard University – Gordon Parks is rightly recognized as the most important African-American photographer of the 20th century. On view through July 19th, 2019, “Gordon Parks: Selections from the Dean Collection” features photographs from the collection of Kasseem Dean and Alicia Keys, who hold the largest private collection of his work. MIT Museum – In celebration of the Bauhaus centennial, the Museum presents “Arresting Fragments: Object Photography at the Bauhaus”, featuring 90 prints from Bauhaus Archive, Berlin, collections. The photographs, made primarily by Lucia Moholy (1923-28), Walter Peterhans (1928-33) and Erich Consemüller, celebrate the modernity of items of everyday use, many of them designed at the Bauhaus. Cape Ann Museum, Gloucester, MA – Esther Pullman’s solo show, “Green Places/Green Spaces/Greenhouses” features her sweeping, multi-frame panoramic photographs of fields, nurseries and greenhouses that trace the cycle of the seasons, death and rebirth, and the passage of time, becoming a metaphor for our threatened planet. Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, MA – Photographs made from recently rediscovered Kodachrome and Ektachrome slides, “John Goodman: not recent color” features vibrant cinematic views of the American cultural landscape through the lens of the young street photographer in the 1970s and 1980s, on view through July 31st, 2019.
