Ah, summer! For many of us, it’s time for road trips to the beach or mountains. With that in mind, we have gathered photography exhibits updated for August from galleries and museums throughout New England. Listed geographically for your planning convenience, we are including more venues, keeping our descriptions brief, and as always, providing images and links for all shows. Please feel free to check back periodically, as we will update throughout the summer.
SOWA – Boston’s South End Arts District
Beacon Gallery – In Fern L. Nesson’s solo exhibit The Mind of God, photographic abstractions celebrate the elegance of mathematics and its confluence with spirituality. In unmanipulated photographs that capture the play and interplay of light, Nesson seeks to express moments when “mass becomes energy.” On view through August 22nd, 2021.

Fountain Street Fine Art – All summer long, the gallery is hosting The Sidewalk Video Gallery of public video and digital media art. Exhibitions of short experimental work will be displayed on two 50” monitors facing out from gallery windows at sidewalk level. The rotating program promotes diversity and includes a broad array of artists, styles, thematic content and levels of experience. “Sound Pixel” by Meghan Quinn will be on view through August 14th, 2021. “Memories of the Present” by Beáta Kolbašovská + “Entangled” by Jack Williams will be viewable from August 15th- 28th, 2021.

BOSTON PROPER
Museum of Fine Arts, Boston – Treat yourself to Personal and Political: Women Photographers, 1965-1985, the newly installed rotation inside the Women Take the Floor show at the top of the Art of the Americas Wing. Representing a pivotal era in feminism, more than 30 works address themes ranging from the natural world to street photography to the domestic sphere and include renowned US photographers such as Diane Arbus, Sally Mann, Annie Leibovitz (above), Cindy Sherman and Ming Smith, as well as recently acquired works by under-recognized photographers from the Americas, such as Adriana Lestido.

Robert Klein Gallery – In conjunction with his solo retrospective show Paul Ickovic: In Transit at Bibliotheque national de France (BnF, Paris) on view through August 22nd, 2021, the gallery is presenting a selection of B&W street scenes and improvised portraits beginning in the 1960s. The BnF exhibit highlights the close bond the photographer forged with his contemporaries – Henri Cartier-Bresson (on exhibit in an adjoining gallery), Bruce Davidson, Louis Faurer, and Josef Koudelka. A 61-plate monograph entitled Ickovic, published in conjunction with the museum exhibition, is available for purchase from the gallery.

Leica Gallery Boston – Through the Eye of the Witness group photography exhibition highlights the distinctive styles of ten local Leica photographers: Bijan Sabet (above), Zeeshan Kahn, Kwesi Budu-Arthur, Susan Flaherty, Ben McCosh, Abdul Dremali, Juan Murray, Jean-Marie Detcher, Ellen Slotnick, and Vicki Windman. On view through August 2021, a gallery reception with the artists is planned for August 19th, 6pm to 9pm.

Panopticon Gallery, Hotel Commonwealth in Kenmore Square – For a sublime journey through New England’s seasons, visit WWYR Associate Editor and photographer Suzanne Révy’s solo exhibition, A Murmur in the Trees, featuring her sweeping, meditative multi-panel landscapes. On view from August 5th through September, 2021, there will be an Opening Reception with the artist TOMORROW, Thursday, August 5th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.

Faye G. Jo and James Stone Gallery, Boston University – A Yellow Rose Project is a collaborative photographic effort to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote. Photographers Frances Jakubek and Meg Griffiths invited over one hundred women photographers to respond to the anniversary and reflect on the strength and resiliency of women. A gallery exhibit will be open to members of the Boston University community, but an ongoing slideshow will be featured in the gallery’s main window, along with an online component. Boston Camera Club, outdoor exhibit at Fan Pier – Three cheers for more public art! Stroll the 250-foot long banner at Fan Pier in Boston’s Seaport District to enjoy The Focused Eye: Our Unique Views, 88 images curated by Boston photographer and educator Emily Belz, culled from members of the Boston Camera Club, (the second oldest of its kind in the country!) on view through November 2021.

Griffin Museum, Winchester, MA– Atlanta based gallerist Arnika Dawkins presents “Beauty as Refuge” in the 27th Annual Juried Members’ Exhibition featuring Arthur Griffin Legacy Award winner Tokie Taylor (above), Griffin Award winner Ralph Mercer and honorable mentions Meg Birnbaum, Steven Edson, Danielle Goldstein, Leslie Jean-Bart, Nadine Levin, Olga Merrill, Ellen Royalty, JP Terlizzi, Donna Tramontozzi and Nina Weinberg Doran, among others in the Main Gallery. Photoville’s 9th Edition of the Fence at Griffin Museum of Photography, Winchester, MA – Get your walking shoes! In collaboration with the Griffin Museum, Photoville’s The FENCE returns to downtown Winchester for the summer. The FENCE is an annual juried competition and the exhibit includes a national and regional selection of photographers, all within walking distance of the Griffin Museum. The Photographic Resource Center – Worcester, MA– The Photographic Resource Center celebrates 25 years of their annual show, EXPOSURE, in the Mary Cosgrove Dolphin Gallery, Ghosh Science & Tech Center at Worcester State University. deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln, MA – Two shows incorporate photography among other media. What We Do In The Shadows features prints and photographs that explore places hidden in shadows where systems or governments can conceal something sinister, and artists seek to reveal it . The exhibit includes local luminaries such as Lou Jones, Barbara Norfleet and Laura McPhee. A second show, Sonya Clark: Heaven Bound includes six large scale vinyl print portraits of former enslaved Americans, such as Frederick Douglas and Sojourner Truth, among others. Preservation Hall, Wellfleet, MA – Daniel Ranalli’s solo exhibition, Retro-Active, offers an enticing selection from six of his ongoing series made on Cape Cod over the past twenty years. A fusion of conceptual art and environmental photography, Ranalli’s imagery often flirts with the balance between control and chance, to enchanting effect. Newport Art Museum, Newport, RI – Celebrity can be fleeting, but photography permanently underscores the highlights of popularity. The museum mines its collections to bring out the stars in Fame, featuring pictures by Bill Jay, Carmel Vitullo, Stephan Brigidi, Donna Ferrato, Henry Horenstein, and Paris Visone, on view through August 22nd, 2021. Hair Stories is a splendid multimedia exhibit exploring cultural, religious and societal ideas intertwined with hair, featuring photographers Tara Bogart (above), María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Sean M. WaterFire Arts Center (WFAC), Providence, RI – EYE TO EYE: Photographs and Projects by Mary Beth Meehan gathers images from large-scale photographic installations that the acclaimed photographer has made over the past twenty years as a part of community projects in her hometown of Brockton, MA, Providence, RI, Newnan, Georgia and Silicon Valley, California. Meehan’s engaging and empathetic multi-generational portraits of townspeople highlight individuality while underscoring the shared humanity of our diverse nation, sparking conversations through her riveting, oversized prints and building-scale banner installations. In conjunction with this exhibit, ANNYE RAYE PITTS: WITNESS takes a personal dive into American history through the imagery and ephemera of a Providence woman who moved north from Montgomery, Alabama as part of the Great Migration. A collaboration between Meehan and Jonathan Pitts-Wiley, photographer, storyteller and Ms.Pitts’ grandson, the exhibit is on display in the Visitor Center Gallery. Both exhibits will be on view through August 22nd, 2021.

Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland, Maine – Here is a show we’d love to see: George Tice and Andrew Wyeth: Parallel Visions, the first exhibition to show Tice’s Maine work in the place that inspired it and the first to pair the two artists together, exploring the unique vision of each artist through their depictions of those evocative parallel worlds that capture both the myth of Maine and the reality its residents call home. CALL FOR ENTRY
Through These Realities is an initiative spearheaded by neuroscientist and photographer Joshua Sariñana and poet Linsey Jayne, editor-in-chief of Spry Literary Journal, with support from the Somerville Arts Council. They seek to bring Somerville-based photographers and poets of color together through a juried process to unite images and poetry in conversation for an in-person and online exhibition this fall.
