Arlette Kayafas at Gallery Kayafas, which is closing at the end of August 2024. Photo by Elin Spring
Gallery Kayafas – Gallery Kayafas will be closing at the end of this summer. During the past 21 years, director Arlette Kayafas has hosted some of the most innovative and thought-provoking exhibitions in metro Boston and has helped launch the careers of countless artists. Her thematic compare & contrast shows featuring famous and emerging photographers is a favorite of ours. In her final exhibition, she has done it again, pairing Jack Leuders-Booth’s passion project Women Prisoner Polaroids with newcomer Kevin Bennett Moore’s exuberantly anxious No Bitter Fruit. Exhibited along with the late Robert Moeller’s mixed media Democracy Under Siege, Karen Moss’ ink drawings of Portraits: Personal Spaces and Lauren Evans’ sculptural Small World, Gallery Kayafas describes the state of our nation at yet another inflection point, underscoring the importance and impact of free artistic expression. We will miss you, Arlette!
Current exhibitions will be on view through August 10th, 2024, with an Artist Reception on Friday, July 12th from 5:30 – 8:00pm and a celebration of Robert Moeller on Thursday, July 18th from 5:30 – 7:30pm.
LAST CHANCE! First Friday Reception on August 2nd, 2024 from 5:30 – 8:00pm.

Coming next to Abakus Projects – Archival photographs by Florence Henri (1893-1982), an American-born Swiss artist trained in music, painting and photography. She studied at the Bauhaus with László Maholy-Nagy, who said of her work, “With Florence Henri’s photos, photographic practice enters a new phase, the scope of which would have been unimaginable before today…. Reflections and spatial relationships, superposition and intersections are just some of the areas explored from a totally new perspective and viewpoint.” She was particularly celebrated for her use of mirrors, creating photographs that were at once exacting and ambiguous. Henri’s artistic practice spanned the periods of cubism, constructivism, the Italian futurist movement and surrealism. On view from Saturday, August 17th – Sunday, September 22nd, 2024.
