Good news to start the New Year! You needn’t succumb to winter doldrums, the number of intriguing photographic shows opening – or ongoing – in January is only surpassed by the enticing variety on offer. Here are my top picks for this week’s openings and exhibits.

First Friday in SoWa – January 8, 2016
The sophisticated, tongue-in-cheek B&W self-portraits of 1980’s party boy Tseng Kwong Chi (above) opens at Carroll and Sons in a show called “Ambiguous Ambassador”, running through February 27, 2016, with a reception on Wednesday, January 27 from 5:30 – 7:30pm: http://carrollandsons.net/exhibitions/upcoming.php

Bromfield Gallery is hosting SOLO 2016, featuring the two winners of it’s annual competition, Andrea Star Greitzer and Camilo Ramirez (above). Jurored by ICA, Boston Assistant Curator Ruth Erickson, Greitzer’s series “In the Museum” offers inventive ways of looking at both uninhabited museum spaces and luscious sculptures, while Camilo Ramirez’ series “The Gulf” explores that unique and quintessentially American region of the South from which he hails with a beguiling use of color and light, at once mysterious and revealing. The daring Iranian photographer Gohar Dashti returns to Ars Libri, Robert Klein’s satellite gallery at 500 Harrison Avenue, with the new series “Stateless” (above). Her emblematically pointed style of skewering government policies regarding delicate social issues is matched by masterfully staged compositions in which her subjects and the viewer become complicit in her poignant and devilish commentaries. “The Memory Palace: Domesticity, Objects and the Interior”, an ongoing show in two parts and multiple media at Danforth Art Museum in Framingham, MA explores interpretations of home, highlighting the power and symbolism of interior spaces and the objects we display there. Lovely, intriguing imagery by area photographers Lindsey Beal, Marie Craig, Molly Lamb and Astrid Reischwitz (above) are included in this engaging show, which merits a road trip for a slew of reasons, starting with the Members Only Reception on January 9, 2016.
