Quick! There’s a pop-up exhibit at Gallery Kayafas in Boston’s SoWa arts district through Wednesday, April 25th, 2018. It is the premier showing for the Recently Collective, a group of twelve Boston-based emerging artists working in photography, mixed media, painting, and installation (with a strong emphasis on photography). I love the sparks that fly in a collective, pushing and fostering conversation and critique, elevating the work of individual artists as they engage with each other – and now us. The gallery will be open from 11:00am – 5:00pm every day through Wednesday, April 25th, 2018 and will host a special event for Collectors & Curators on Tuesday evening, beginning at 5:30pm. C’mon, who among us isn’t a Collector? Celebrate spring, treat yourself and join Gallery Kayafas in championing Boston’s promising emerging artists!

The exhibition, entitled Recently, features works by: Mike Bodall, Tynan Byrne, Claire Daly, Kaitlyn Fitzgerald, Kevin Foley, Amber Hakim, Max Heller, Camilla Jerome, Lee Kennedy, Cate McAnulty, Alex Simpson and Lee Wormald. Although the gathered works of each artist are distinctive, the influence of their Collective community is reflected in thought-provoking connections between pieces throughout the exhibit.

Several of the artists work employ juxtapositions in arresting and enlightening ways. Lee Wormald’s affecting B&W photograph of a pensive boy leaning awkwardly against a rock, isolated in a hilly field against the backdrop of an austere concrete housing project, speaks as metaphorically as the distorted geometry of Kaitlyn Fitzgerald’s mangled lobster trap thrust against the jumbled boulders of a seawall on a rocky beach and Mike Bodall’s sequestered home spied from a cliff overlooking a forested expanse extending to a deserted horizon.

The luscious hues and graceful lines of Amber Hakim’s engrossing still-life and landscape views ache with desire in her lyrical installation. On the facing wall, Camilla Jerome’s visually elegant and emotionally stirring compositions are riveting, her disparate subjects sharing a subdued palette that belies their surprising tactility. Between these two, Tynan Byrne’s staccato tabletop installation of small rectangular shots feature dizzying perspectives stabbing at issues of identity and home with palpable ambiguity and disorientation.

Recently Collective has mounted a show that is at once diverse and cohesive. Photography abounds in two and three dimensional installations, like Kevin Foley’s eclectic mix of photographic and mixed media pieces, punctuated by vivacious painted works by Cate McAnulty, dancing copper mobiles by Alex Simpson, and the contemplative, earthy green installations by Lee Kennedy.
